During the 1950s concrete monsters popped-up around Europe. As Rayner Banham defined in 1955. in his essay “The New Brutalism”, they were the manifests of the new architecture aesthetics which represented the ethics of the memorability as an image, clear exhibition of structure and valuation of materials “as found”.
Brutalist architecture became common during the 1970s in Former Yugoslavia, and in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, when most of the capital public and commercial buildings were build.
In order to emphasize critical state of the brutalists’ architecture in Banja Luka today, we are using photographs and comment them with parodical pop musical slogans.
“ZABORAVILI ROKENROL I OTIŠLI U ŠOPING MOL”
(meaning: Concrete, concrete, only concrete) part of Rambo Amadeus’ lyrics from the song called “Beton” (Concrete) from the album “O tugo jesenja” (Oh, autumn sorrow), 1988.
(meaning: They forgot the rock ’n’ roll and went to the shopping mall) part of Disciplin A Kitschme lyrics from the song called “Zaboravili rokenrol!?!” (Forgot the Rock ’n’ Roll!?!) from the album “Opet” (Again), 2015.
